UMR Statement on President Biden’s Fiscal Year 2025 Budget Request

March 13, 2024

“United for Medical Research is discouraged that President Biden’s fiscal 2025 budget request does not meet our nation’s biomedical research needs at a moment when we are beginning to make great strides toward treating and curing our most vexing diseases.

“While we commend the Biden Administration for a modest increase for NIH’s base budget, it still falls well below the rate of biomedical inflation.  The consequences of such underinvestment would be felt quickly:  Critical new research grants not getting awarded, far fewer opportunities for our next generation of researchers, and America’s role as the global leader in biomedical research being seriously threatened by major investments in research by China and other countries.

“We urge members of Congress to fund NIH’s fiscal year 2025 base budget at a strong, sustained and predictable level that protects the nation’s health and provides hope to patients and families.”
