The following statement from United for Medical Research can be attributed to UMR President David Pugach:
Sept. 28 – “United for Medical Research applauds the statements today by House Energy & Commerce and Senate HELP leadership reiterating their bipartisan commitments to making Cures the law before the end of this year. UMR joins them in calling on the House and Senate to make passage of this critical legislation a top priority when Members and Senators return to Washington in November. Too much is at stake to let the clock run out on Cures.
“Increased funding for medical research through the National Institutes of Health is a national priority, and few issues before Congress have received such a high level of bipartisan and bicameral support. NIH research fuels the pipeline of discovery and innovation necessary to prevent, treat and cure our most vexing diseases. NIH research also has a significant economic impact, supporting more than 350,000 jobs across the United States and contributing some $60 billion annually in economic activity.
“The funding provided in Cures legislation – coupled with strong annual appropriations – would put the agency back on a growth path after it experienced more than a decade of flat-funding. We urge Congress to act quickly during the Lame Duck and pass this important and widely supported measure.”
