The following statement regarding Senate passage of the Defense and Labor, HHS, and Education Appropriations Act can be attributed to UMR President Alex Currie:
“United for Medical Research (UMR) is sincerely grateful for the Senate’s critical bipartisan support of a $2 billion increase in funding for the National Institutes of Health. The steadfast leadership of Senators Roy Blunt and Patty Murray made this increase possible, and the strong commitment by their Senate colleagues helps ensure that medical research remains a national priority.
“Research funded by the NIH is an engine for medical innovation, a pathway to hope for patients and an economic catalyst, supporting more than 400,000 jobs and contributing nearly $70 billion in economic activity across the United States. It is through strong and sustained funding for medical research that we will address the nation’s most devastating and costly illnesses.
“UMR urges quick passage by the House of Representatives and looks forward to the president signing this legislation that will improve the health and wellbeing of our nation.”
