“The Labor, Health and Human Services spending bill released today by the House Appropriations Committee is a blow to the mission of the National Institutes of Health, which would suffer a cut of $3.8 billion to its current funding level. The NIH and the entire biomedical research community has for the last several years been catching up from a decade of flat funding and its lifesaving and life-improving achievements across the country have been nothing short of extraordinary.
“While United for Medical Research is disappointed in the funding level for NIH released today by the Committee, we will continue working with members of the House and Senate to ensure Congress provides NIH the necessary resources to maintain steady, sustained, and predictable funding. Every family in every community – both rural and urban – is counting on new discoveries to cure cancer, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and other diseases. NIH has helped generate tremendous progress on this research, and now is not the time to stop that momentum.”
UMR is a coalition of leading research institutions, patient and health advocates and private industry seeking steady and sustainable increases in funding for the National Institutes of Health in order to save and improve lives, advance innovation and fuel the economy.
