Research funded by the National Institutes of Health saves lives, improves health, and offers hope to people the world-over affected by disease. This research funding also has a positive economic impact across the United States.
For each of the past several years, UMR has commissioned an analysis of jobs and economic activity supported by NIH research funding in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. According to UMR’s most recent analysis, in fiscal year 2021, NIH research funding supported 552,444 jobs and generated $94.18 billion in economic activity — or $2.60 of economic activity for every $1 of research funding. The report, NIH’s Role in Sustaining the U.S. Economy, also looks at the national and state-level impact of NIH research funding.
