United for Medical Research is very pleased by the $2 billion increase in NIH base funding included in the Labor-HHS bill the Senate Appropriations Committee passed this morning. UMR is especially grateful to the leadership of Senators Baldwin, Capito, Murray and Collins and to their longstanding and steadfast support of federal investments in biomedical research. UMR also applauds Senate Appropriations Committee members for including $127 million in Cures Act funding.
This increase, along with the major investments in past fiscal years for NIH, continues to give patients hope and would help maintain America’s global leadership in biomedical research. The Committee’s action today helps ensure that medical research remains a national priority and UMR urges the Senate to move quickly this Fall toward Senate passage.
UMR is a coalition of leading research institutions, patient and health advocates and private industry seeking steady and sustainable increases in funding for the National Institutes of Health in order to save and improve lives, advance innovation and fuel the economy.
